Some notes i've picked up.

Sorry for the lack of posting - I've been getting myself together between finishing up finals, and getting back home to Texas (I honestly wish that I stayed up in Philly, as much as I am enjoying the weather here...!)

Since the time here will be too short to work, I'll be using these next three weeks to get my technique with watercolor together. As much as I love it, oil just isn't working for me... yet. So I'll be training myself with watercolor, and seeing if I can get some instruction from my professor on acrylics, which he suggested. As far as oils - since I still have a bunch, they'll be practiced when I have the time. I'm confident on my drawing skills - it's just that paint!

I decided to go ahead and buy a watercolor book - I wish I could get a subscription, but I don't enjoy the prospect of not knowing if or when i'd get my magazines, since i'm not always settled in a location, or having to ship every issue to where I am at the moment.

Upon some inspection, I have found an interesting prospect - doing an underpainting even for watercolor. I didn't think it would work honestly - I thought it'd wash out... but many people seem to insist on it to bring out those other subtle warm and cool colors, for both people and objects. How about that? I'll have to try it out soon, if not tonight.

Life Drawing Final

Haha, i've been posting up all of my classwork/homework lately, because that has been the only thing I have time to work on... I can't wait until I get to start up on commissions, personal/RP (I use my logs as inspiration for illustration), and practice to improve my skill with various mediums. I'd really like to work with oil paints, but I can't remember for sure if I can bring my oil paints on the plane with me... I think I can, with checked luggage!

Anyhow, back on subject. Give or take 10 hours, and here's how far I got with this charcoal piece. The original idea was to take a photo of yourself similar to the "Jenne Femme" cast copy drawing, and make yourself into a cast drawing based upon it. Yeah. It's harder than I thought... I want to smooth places out, but I want to keep hard edges in others...

Here's process shots - I took some videos myself, to look back on how I work.

When I'm done working on a last painting for another class, I'll come back and bring out some minor highlights, and smooth out minimal places, and also - clean up the edges. That's the thing I don't enjoy about charcoal - it's dust getting all over my white part of paper...

The Yoruban Creation Story...

Here's an gestural photoshop drawing I did for tribal arts - my presentation was over African Creation Stories, and themes that were consistent. I do plan to do more for future, final pieces.

Here's the Yoruban version, of Oduduwa dropping the handful of dirt upon the Ancient Waters, and the chicken scratching the dirt into land. .

A preview of a current project!

I'm not out of the fire just yet - but I at least got to pick up on my final projects again, after some issues. Here's the last project to my Junior Studio - a Holiday/Christmas Card. Watercolor on 140 Hot Press Arches.

I really do want to be able to make more smooth brushstrokes - one of the reasons I'd like to intern under someone who also can do watercolor, on top of whatever I end up going for.

After getting to scan in some other sketches and process points, I thought I'd go ahead and post some of what led me up to it - Here's the original value marker drawing, and color comps - In the end, I combined parts of the comps from both versions - the darkness of the cat in the first, and the darkness of the wall surrounding the window in the second.
