Environment - Underwater Colony

I redid my environment from the last post, which was the second project in my digital modeling class - it came out pretty well for a few things that I ended up learning new from watching tutorial videos that I bought, as well as found on youtube. I definitely plan to explore doing more paintings like these, since I plan to have one for each of the characters for my thesis. I'd like them at least laid out to be ready for painting before the school year starts back up. <3 The teacher really liked it, and gave me tips to push it, so I'll have to remember to do so while I'm doing nothing over break, nya.

I thought I'd go ahead and upload these old environment studies that I did in my digital painting class - Somehow, I never realized just how candy-like these colors were, despite my teacher saying it was okay, haha. I think I would be better off doing a blend of the lower two color studies... The final piece is what I turned in, and it looks so terrible. xD;

I'm in the process of redoing it for my critique - I know it's usually not kosher to up and redo it, but I have the general gist of the whole thing in the new painting - just new mood, atmospheric, and colors more adhering to how they work underwater.

Illustration WIP - Aquarius Stage Design

Here we go~. Now that it's winter, I have a steady amount of WIP's and things to post, though I won't do it all in a day. I'll have it update steadily, maybe every few/other days, or maybe once a week. Anyway - don't mind the little bit of graffiti (amusingly enough, many people liked the little quirk of it!) but here's an near-finished environmental painting I did relating to my thesis, but meant for my Digital Painting Class.

Woah, lull period over?

I haven't updated this in a while, but now that I'm back in school and working on my thesis for sure, I should go ahead and do so. Here's a WIP of what I'm doing now in my digital painting class, which also contributes to my thesis as a stage for one of my characters that I'm working on. Working over my pencil sketch to block in lighting, while also drawing in an extender part of the canvas.

Sketch Club Workshop Art

I still need to get some stuff together for the Workshop show coming up later in the month... But here's a colored pencil drawing that I did during one of the workshops.

Some new ink drawings

A new update, since i'm settled. Completed my Philadelphia internship back at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. I'll be helping out one day a week due to my changed hours in Manhattan at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. I still got a few weeks to go, but I'll be working there four days a week, instead of five.

So, i've been doing a few drawings as i've been traveling - got a brush pen from Blicks (they finally stocked them at either store!) and as expensive as they are... it's delicious. I usually just throw down a loose gesture sketch, then ink in the final drawing to keep it alive, nyan.

And some general drawings I've done~.

Redos and new work

I don't have any new photos to post, only words, nyan.

We had a crit where the seniors talked about our work. They liked how it looked, as far as the zodiac.. but they didn't translate it the way I did. u.u~ All of the suggestions they gave doesn't even allow me to tweak what I have so far, like for other people's work - I have to outright redo the whole pieces... which I did, starting from the reference photos. I honestly don't want to do digital, but due to constraint of time (I only have about... what, 2 weeks to get 3 paintings done, not including my other final?)

Then I have this one colored pencil piece that's huge that I need to do (19 x 25).. I have the thumb roughed and printed out - now I just need to go back to the school and enlarge to 11x17 so that I can refine the sketch by hand, then enlarge even more to final size once approved by the teacher tomorrow, in life drawing.

I'm working on redoing my website. I already have it coded up and everything - just needing to add content and whatnot. Oh man... I didn't realize it until I compared this new layout to the old - it's so freaking dark, the old design. x.x I never realized it either, until now. Also came up with a new logo for the site - maybe I can use it for my senior year...

Remember that 100TC?

Yeah, I did get started, somewhat. I like to do examples for commissions consisting of my own characters, now and then - but I technically should have done some of anthros, since that's the type of genre the website is, that the commissions are being marketed towards. Yeah. They'll all be 3/4 to full body sketches, planning to spend no more than 10-20 minutes on each.

Man, getting home was torture... I'm unfortunately running on only a few hours of sleep spread among two days.

Anyway, here's progress of my sketch/drawing for one out of three of my junior thesis pieces.

A reminder!

I think I'm gonna attempt this on the two art sites that I frequent - because I plan them to be quick attempts at spot illustrations, I'll make them fairly cheap, no more than a hour's worth of work. You might have heard of it, especially if you were into the anime-drawing scene online in the late 90's and early 2000's. The 100 theme challenge? Well, some people have actually made variations on it since then, and it's pretty damn neat. /goes back to homework! I have things to do before my flight later today!

/Edits on 4/16. I've gotten started on these with my own examples - I'll be crossing off those that I've completed, and will link to them on my blog in small batches.

A break (sort of)

I took a weekend to head back to Texas. I'll be heading back to Philadelphia on Monday afternoon... Now that I had today to spend 7 hours or so in some form or fashion a plane or airport, and the remainder of the day to connect with my parents and pets, getting back down to my work tomorrow. Expect some scans and concepts on Monday, of my Junior Thesis.

Family Folklore

Surprisingly, I got this assignment done ahead of schedule ( a week beforehand specifically!) The assignment was to illustrate a family folklore - and put the final thing into context (title and print.)

I'll go ahead and post my context version right now, but i'll have the original and this context version on my website soon enough. Give it a read - most people seem pretty amused by this!:

A partial update.

I realize that blogspot is no longer blocked!

Anyhow, time to start posting again. Before that -- I've been working on two projects. One is a night illustration that I must redo the final piece in (>_< Oils evade me... so doing it in gouache and watercolor. )
The sketch/value study of the Night Illustration.
There's a story behind it - I do roleplay, and my sessions usually end up becoming logs of what could be an adventure story. Here's a scene from it - but I do plan to redo a full pencils version.

I have another piece that I'm doing at the current moment - A folklore of the family. Mine is of my past pet dog who was vicious to everyone. I mean, everyone. Except for me, that is! I'll get a future post with the sketch up and running soon enough, now that it was immediately okay'd for proceeding.

I do commissions on the side, though currently I only have busts open. I thought it'd be nice to post a recent one finished - These busts are fun for me; I usually try to maintain a interesting shape for the entire bust, while still doing my best to keep parts that keep the character distinct.

I'm updating here, with a few things that happened - of course, art related! I'm currently taking an internship prep class - well, it's exactly as mentioned. Had a mock interview and all... the main focus (complaint?) is to work on my perceived confidence.

One task I have to work at is an working illustrator phone/live interview... I'd prefer Jerry Pinkney, but ohh man.

On another matter, there's this neata blog I stumbled upon. I love how her work is, and the posts that she makes. Both art, and relating to the industry and her experiences and thoughts at working towards it, along with tips.  http://976-jjacks.blogspot.com/

The current life drawing project...

We have one more day on this - I'm almost worried that I won't have enough time to finish it, despite the 6 hours of class! I think I've gone far enough with the shadows on the rest of the body -- it's that hair that I've been delaying for as long as I can. As soon as I get over that hump, I can finally get started on adding whites. We've started from a middle gray tone, it's nice to do. Anyhow -

The piece itself is about... 20x25 or so - I know that it's over the required 18x20 size, and all - not sure if I'd cut it down to the required size, or leave it as is. The cast itself that we're working for... well, it's huge. I'd be afraid to be under it when or if it falls. x.x!

My little representation

I created a small version of myself to be identified on my resume - My normal bangstyle, my glasses, a scarf and hoodie, my the colors orange and brown...

Oh, and my ears too! Home, online, and even at school, my main identity consists of my cat attributes, and orange/brown.

On a separate note, I do need to add newer artwork to my portfolio page, as well as life drawing works... On an important note, I really need to redesign the website with the new logo I drew up. It needs to be a bit more popped, yeah?

Our newest project - to create a historical/vintage Parisian poster. Here's my digital comp~. Though simple, it's harder to paint/mix gouache than I thought, let alone on cold press... After breakfast (granted, if I can get outdoors if the weather isn't as terrible as everyone makes it out to be) tomorrow, I'm planning to pick up a few more colors, a few more palette dishes, and some lovely hot press (I do not like the texture of cold!) watercolor paper - and perhaps bristol vellum our teacher suggested.

A new semester.

Sorry about the lack of update lately - winter break just finished, and so did my week vacation from either school or home - classes start tomorrow.

I have a few goals this year - get a job (both day-job wise and small art-time/commission wise on the sites I frequent) and get my artwork done faster. Man, I can churn out a piece when I have the time, but that's the problem... I don't have the time! I don't have too terrible of a workload this semester (it payed off to overload my schedule in the past semesters...) Also, planning to ditch focus on oils, finetune my watercolors, and attempt to learn acrylics to finish off the pop that can't be achieved otherwise.

Expect to see a flurry of sketches soon. First class is Jr. Studio - my focus of study is to be character design, editorial, and specifically book illustration for my portfolio, for my hopeful goal of an appropriate internship.
